Another awesome trip with family and friends trip to Macquarie Rivulet in as many weeks. This time around we did the waterfall only variant for each abseil.
This time we drove in via Bowral as I really hate the Princess Highway - timewise it's much of muchness.
This has been on my hit list for years, so it was great to finally do it and discover yet another awesome canyon. It deserves the 9/10 that Tom Brennan gives it.
This season has been rather interesting so far as a number of canyons have been off the beaten track and so I was hoping for yet another - but alas it's pretty much a highway to the start of the canyon - no danger of getting lost on this one.
This "canyon" is heaps of fun - it's more of an open gully than a canyon featuring waterfalls and slippery creek walking more reminscent of Kanangra than the classic Blue Mountains canyons.
It is rather unique as almost every abseil has an easy beginner or hardman option that generally goes down the middle of a waterfall.
The plan was to do a nice, easish, good quality and fun canyon. Tom Brennan had given it a 10/10 and Rick Jamieson's guide suggested that with a grade 2 that it should be easy. Well, maybe I should've read Tom's guide beforehand, especially the part that states "... not a good canyon for beginners".
Of course it didn't help that the 2013 October fires had turned the walk in to a rather scrappy affair - especially Little Bell Creek. Also, Bell Creek itself had a number of log jams which made blowing up lilos seem to be a pain so we didn't bother but the longish swims did get a bit tiring. The dark consticted canyon sections are superb, so whilst Bell Creek didn't float my boat, I think a return trip in couple of years when the vegetation is back and hopefully the log jams cleared a bit will be worthwhile.
However, we did get 4 canyons for the price of one - Little Bell, Belfry, Bell Creek and Joe's Canyons.
Today signalled the start of a week of daily thunderstorms. We were going to do Upper Bowens Creek South but with a forecast of storms and 15mm of rain from 10:30am Matt suggested we tackle Dalpura Canyon instead as this would give us time to get out before the storms hit.
